Loopstra Nixon celebrates 40 years

While Loopstra Nixon is a forward-looking firm, we enjoy a rich history.

Chuck Loopstra leaves the firm of Luck Harris and Belyea with law student Sandy Nixon. They open a general practice law firm on June 1, 1973 in a storefront office in northwest Toronto. Sandy Nixon becomes a partner upon his call to the bar in the spring of 1974.

After several internal expansions, the firm finally outgrows its original location and takes over the historic and strategically located Bank of Montreal building on the corner of Rexdale Boulevard and Kipling Avenue. The firm has developed specialities in corporate law, banking, municipal law, real estate, commercial litigation, family law, and personal injury litigation.

After continuing rapid growth, the firm enters into a joint venture with two of its key developer clients to begin construction on Woodbine Place, a 90,000 square foot office tower. Woodbine Place opens May 24, 1990 with Loopstra Nixon occupying the top floor.

After celebrating its 25th year in 1998, the firm restructures in 2000 to focus on business and public law in response to growing client needs and to recruit high-caliber talent.

Loopstra Nixon becomes the Canadian affiliate of the Cicero League of International Lawyers. This enables the firm to offer regional clients an international reach. Through Cicero, a fruitful affiliation begins with one of Western New York’s top law firms, Phillips Lytle LLP.

Loopstra Nixon and Phillips Lytle move their international alliance to LawExchange International, a network of over 1,500 lawyers practicing among 26 affiliated law firms with offices in 61 cities and 23 countries worldwide. Loopstra Nixon completes a major renovation at Woodbine Place to facilitate further growth.

Loopstra Nixon celebrates its 40th anniversary. The firm has earned a sterling reputation for all aspects of business and public law, and is consistently ranked among Ontario’s top municipal and planning law firms. The firm is also a significant player in the private equity and mid-tier corporate law market in Toronto and defence counsel to Canada’s largest municipality.

Loopstra Nixon reaches 40 lawyers, growing in all areas of practice to continue providing service that exceeds the expectations of our clients. The firm also underwent a brand refresh. As Looopstra Nixon has grown, exponentially, since our founding in 1973, so have the relationships we've built with clients. We've refined the way we do business and our new brand is a reflection of that change as we continue to move forward, providing consistently excellent, value-based service to our clients.
