Matt practices civil litigation with a focus on municipal liability and insurance defence. Before joining Loopstra Nixon LLP in 2021, Matt articled and worked for several years at a prominent insurance defence firm in London, Ontario and provided services to clients throughout southwestern Ontario. He then continued to hone his skills in a commercial litigation role with a large full-service firm in Toronto for several years.
He has experience acting for insurers, municipalities, transit authorities, and public authorities in respect of personal injury, property damage, and commercial business loss claims. He has provided coverage opinions to insurers and acted in cross-border, multi-party defences stemming from motor vehicle accidents and occupiers’ liability. Matt has represented his clients before the Ontario Small Claims Court, Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Matthew was called to the Bar in 2013 and attended law school at the University of Western Ontario, where he received a certificate in negotiation and mediation, and was awarded the Dean of Law Entrance Scholarship.
When not practising law, Matt can be found in the outdoors hiking, camping, and sailing.
